One of the most common things, after "I hate bra shopping!" is "My size is..."
After years of fitting I have found that one body is not defined by a specific size as the bra industry has not regulated the sizing or measurements of actual bras. While there are commonalities within brands even a style or colour change will have an effect on the size combination required. There are times when a 34F will have a larger/longer band than a 36DD, even in similar styles and fabrics.
The key is to keep an open mind, avoid getting hung up on the number or letter, know the fitter has an in-depth knowledge of bras and how each style fits different bodies.
Three key fitting guidelines that make the size of the bra irrelevant:
1. The underwires fit snuggly, like a glove, at the crease between body and breast. No spaces, no skin on skin, no folding and smooshing. Avoid the coconuts on a string effect. If the underwires do not fit snuggly at the crease DO NOT buy the bra. No matter what other elements you like. Another size combination or style will work better so keep looking. You deserve the comfort and support of a correct fit.
2. The band is snug, can only be pulled an inch away from the body at the back, and parallel to the floor. Wider bands are more secure, stay snug longer and smoosh back flesh less. If the band rides up it is too big.
3. There is enough fabric in the cup to encase all breast tissue and have a smooth transition from bra to body. This includes the side boob. This must be encased in the wires as well.
Sizes have changed. I lined up a Chantelle 166 in 34D, which has been around for 20 years or more, and a Fantasie Deco 1554 in a 28FF, which is a new style, the bands and cups are the same.

This traditional cut is for those who prefer full coverage. Comfortable waist and smooth fit. The 100% knit silk eliminates the bulky feel of cotton underwear. Bra Care and Wear Tips
Hand wash all bras with an under wire or a moulded cup. It may seem to take more time but you will get much more life out of your hand washed bra, at least a year as opposed to 3-6 months. This will save you money and cut down how often you will need to go bra shopping.
Machine washing your bra will cause the wires to break, twist and warp. Which will drastically reduce the life of your bra costing more money and making it necessary to go bra shopping more often. The moulded bras will get wrinkly and bumpy. Which will show up under t-shirts and light fabrics. Use a gentle fabric wash, soak for 10 to 15 minutes. Gently scrub any trouble areas with a soft toothbrush and then rinse thoroughly. For moulded or padded cup bras, wrap it in a towel to get excess water out. Avoid wringing out your bra.
Hang to dry as the heat from the dryer will dry out elastic and melt fabric. Hang your bra by either front or back as hanging it by one strap will warp the front of the cups.
It is best to have 5-9 bras to rotate so you can wear a different one each day and frequently wash them but not have to wash the same one every night.
Washing often gets the body oils and salts, that cause fibers to break down, out of the fabric.
When purchasing a bra it should fit snuggly on the loosest settings so that there are two more sets of hooks to adjust and tighten to as the fabric stretches.
When putting on your bra avoid hooking it up in the front and twisting it around your body. That puts unnecessary pressure on the fabric and under wires, causing both the break or break down prematurely. Instead hook it up at the back, at waist level, pull the cups up and into position. Then put on the straps. You may need to lift the breast tissue, settle the under wire at the crease between your breast and chest wall. Then settle your breast into the cups.
